Springfield Urban League | Private Showing of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

On November 11th, 2022 the Springfield Urban League hosted a private IMAX showing of Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever for our Education & School Age Youth program participants!

Exposing our youth to positive representation of African and African American culture is essential.  When our youth see themselves reflected positively in movies and media, they are able to broaden and enhance their self-perception, and feel good about who they are.  This film showcased various aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M), which are all major emphases in our 21st Century After School program and Abe Ro-bots club.  We are dedicated towards increasing S.T.E.A.M awareness amongst African American youth, so that they are exposed to the career opportunities in S.T.E.A.M. based professions.

“Events such as this are one of the many unique opportunities that we provide for our scholars.  Our academic support, mentoring, and community resources are all excellent tools that we utilize.  However, it’s the real-life, up close, and relatable experiences that really make lasting impressions.  We love showing them what they are capable of!  Seeing powerful leaders who look like they do truly inspires them to reach for the excellence we know they have inside!” – Springfield Urban League Director of Education and School Age Youth Ashley Moore

Many who attend our private showing wore their best Wakanda themed costume or wore all white in efforts to honor the late actor Chadwick Boseman who passed on August 28, 2020 from colon cancer.
