This curriculum is specifically designed for new state and local agency case managers and others engaged in the delivery of maternal case management services, primarily in the Department of Human Services (DHS) programs of Better Birth Outcomes (BBO) and Family Case Management (FCM). This curriculum is required for new case managers working in the Better Birth Outcomes program.

The curriculum provides BBO case managers and others with the training necessary to deliver the March of Dimes, Becoming a Mom/Comenzando Bien, prenatal education curriculum. Becoming a Mom has been supplemented with additional training modules on specific topic areas: full-term pregnancy, effects of alcohol and drug use on pregnancy, effects of smoking on pregnancy, development of a Reproductive Life Plan and Motivational Interviewing (basic skills and techniques) in the context of well woman’s health education. Total estimated time needed to fully complete the curriculum is 4 to 5 hours.

Additional Information

Upon completion of this curriculum, participants will be able to:

  • Deliver the Becoming a Mom/Comenzando Bien prenatal education curriculum with their prenatal clients
  • Utilize Motivational Interviewing techniques in their case management of prenatal clients
  • Assist clients with the development and implementation of a Reproductive Life Plan
  • Understand the effects of smoking, alcohol and drug use before, during and after pregnancy; assist pregnant women in understanding the risks associated with these behaviors
  • Increase their knowledge of full-term pregnancy and the effects of deliveries that occur prior to full-term

New BBO case managers are expected to complete the curriculum within 30 days of hire. The web modules may be viewed at any time; it is necessary to view all modules in the order given. Modules do not have to be viewed all at one time. Prior to viewing this curriculum, BBO case managers should have obtained and reviewed the March of Dimes, Becoming a Mom/Comenzando Bien, curriculum manual and the BBO Prenatal Education Curriculum Guide.
