Target Audience The Pediatric Health Assessment Course is designed for local health department registered nurses who will be examining and screening infants and children in clinic settings through Family Case Management Services and Well Child Clinics, Health Works and/or following High risk Infant Follow-Up Programs. The course is a basic pediatric health assessment course.

Description The Pediatric Health Assessment Course is designed for local health department registered nurses who will be examining and screening infants and children in clinic settings through Family Case Management Services and Well Child Clinics, Health Works and/or following High risk Infant Follow-Up Programs. The course is a basic pediatric health assessment course. Goal: The registered nurse completing this course will have an expanded pediatric knowledge base that will assist them in screening for and identifying actual/potential problems, provide referrals to appropriate health care providers and facilitate improved health outcomes for children.
Performance Objectives Upon completion of this course the registered nurse will be able to: • Demonstrate basic knowledge of the process of interviewing and collecting an age-specific pediatric health history. • Verbalize/demonstrate beginning physical assessment skills. • Demonstrates beginning ability in recognizing, identifying and documenting normal findings versus deviations from normal. • Verbalizes understanding of referral process. • Demonstrate beginning competence in identifying and documenting deviations from normal pediatric development utilizing the ASQ III Screening tool. • Integrate history, physical, nutritional, psychosocial and cognitive development assessment into the health evaluation of pediatric clients. • Demonstrate knowledge of resources available for the provision of age appropriate anticipatory guidance in health education.
Special Instructions The classroom portion of this course is provided over 2 on-consecutive days. The course format includes the use of: • Self learning modules* • In person Lecture/discussion • Lecture on various systems using DVD presentations • Demonstration/return demonstration • Audio/visuals • Submission of a comprehensive individual case assessment • Clinical practicum – 12 hours • Pediatric assessment kits (for use during course only)** *The self-learning modules are to be used to assist you in reviewing pediatric anatomy and physiology covered in your basic nursing education. Each student is expected to complete the self-learning modules. It is for your use only and will not be covered or collected in class. **You will receive a pediatric assessment kit on the first day that is yours to use through the class. Please remember to plug in your otoscope/ophthalmoscope battery 24 hours prior to class. This kit includes: (Kits will be collected on the last day of class) • Stethoscope • Otoscope/ophthalmoscope/ear speculum • Reflex hammer • Pediatric blood pressure kit • Ruler • Pen light • Tape measure • Barkauskas Textbook – Health and Physical Assessment Course Requirements: Students will need to plan for reading, practice, watching DVD presentations, and preparation time outside of the classroom. Course completion and CEUs will be based upon: 1. Attendance at both classes 2. Completion of DVD lectures (on your own) 3. Class participation 4. Completion of 12 hours of practicum (within 30 days of final class) under the supervision of a physician, nurse practitioner or an experienced RN who has completed this Course. 5. Submission of a history, physical exam and ASQ-III of an infant/child.
