School sex education for young people
Why is AIDS Education Important for Young People?
HIV/AIDS What you should know.

Young people are especially vulnerable to HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). They are also vulnerable as regards drug use (and not just injected drugs). Even if they are not engaging in risk behaviors today, they may soon be exposed to situations that put them at risk.

  • In many countries 60% of all new HIV infections are among 15-24 year-olds.

  • The highest rates of STDs are usually found in the age range 20-24 years, followed by 15-19 years.

The ONLY way to tell if you've been infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS, is to be tested!  While there is no cure for HIV, early medical attention and treatment can slow the affects of the virus and enable you to stay healthier longer.

An HIV Antibody Test is a blood or oral test that can determine whether antibodies to HIV are present in the person's body.  Antibodies are produced after infection with HIV.  There is no test for AIDS.

You should consider taking an HIV antibody test if you:

  • are a man who has had sex with other men.

  • Have shared injection needles or equipment;

  • have had sex with one or more partners whose sex and drug behavior are unknown to you;

  • have had sex with someone who is infected with HIV or who falls into one of the above groups; or

  • you (and or your partner) are pregnant or considering pregnancy.

  • (Early treatment can help protect babies of HIV-infected mothers from being born with HIV)

Most people develop detectable antibodies within three months after infection.  In rare cases, it can take up to six months.  It is best to test around 90 days after possible exposure.
