Head Start Eligibility Requirements
Residence
Families living in the Sangamon and the Morgan Counties are eligible for Springfield Urban League Head Start.
Income
Children are eligible to participate in Head Start if they are from low-income families.
The Head Start Act establishes income eligibility for participation in Head Start programs based on the poverty guidelines updated annually by the Department of Health and Human Services. Income verification can be the following year W2 or Tax return. Also a current check stub, SSI, child support or financial assistance forms if in school.

Age
The Springfield Urban League serves children birth to 5 years of age. Children who are age 3 by September 1st will be age eligible for Head Start. Children who turn 3 after September 1st will be age eligible for our Early Head Start Program. Children who turn 5 years of age by September 1st are encouraged to enroll their child in a kindergarten program within the school district.
Selection of Children
Once age and income requirements are met, a priority selection applies to all eligible children. The eligibility priority criteria is utilized to rank incoming children through the use of a point system. This point system process ensures those most in need of Head Start services receive first priority for enrollment.
