From the time Mollie Moon formed the very first Urban League Guild in
New York City in 1948 until the present time, Guild members involved in
85 chapters nationwide have been making significant financial and
volunteer contributions to the local affiliates. Charlotte Berry
epitomizes that dedication. She has been an active member of the SULG
since it was chartered in 1958. In her 47 years of membership,
Mrs. Berry has set a unique record of having attended 45 National Urban
League annual conferences including this year’s, which was held in
Washington, D. C., and where she was recognized on July 29th 2005
for her achievements at the NUL’s National Council of Urban League
Guild’s Leadership luncheon. In an early Guild photograph (shown below)
found in the SUL archives, Mrs. Berry is the woman standing second from
left. You may also want to obtain a copy of the August 10, 2005
edition of the State Journal Register’s Senior Lifestyles, which has
Charlotte Berry featured with her award on the front cover.

The Springfield chapter,
whose members remain committed to community service and, in particular,
to educational excellence for minority youth, surpassed its annual
financial commitment to SUL’s scholarship initiative by mid-year.
Fundraising activities included selling first-aid car kits, greeting
cards and Bergner coupon books. The Guild also provided income tax
assistance to more than 800, prepared meals for 1,000 homeless
individuals at the local shelter, assisted with Freedom School, and will
be lending a hand on the silent auction to be held in conjunction with
the League’s annual dinner fundraiser in
November. The Springfield Urban League Guild is currently headed up
by Vera Small. |
