African American Student Achievement and Success
in Springfield
Community Study Group

Education & Youth AA Study Group
Mayor Davlin’s Office of Education Liaison and the Springfield Urban League (SUL)
are hosting a study group to examine barriers to African American student achievement and success in Springfield.  The goal is to develop a set of policy and program recommendations to support Springfield’s educational institutions and the other agencies and organizations that interface with the youth in our community. The Achievement Matters & GEAR-UP Programs

The Achievement Matters Program is designed to spread the gospel that it is imperative that our youth be encouraged to and be rewarded for achieving at high levels, transform parents into sophisticated consumers
of education: creating a consumer demand for quality education.

The GEAR-UP Program stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. Its mission is to increase the number of students at the participating middle and high schools who are prepared to apply to and attend college.

Adolescent Responsibility Program & Teen REACH Programs

Designed to guide and provide information for adolescents (ages 6 -17) to decisions involving academic enhancement/tutoring pregnancy, conflict, career exploration, communication skills, and prevention. The mission of the Teen REACH component is to provide youth with a positive and constructive alternative to street life and gangs. Activities include academic tutoring services, sessions involving the arts and life skills, and field trips. A primary out come for Teen REACH is to encourage youth to stay in school and to acquire a quality education.

Community Development Corporation

Its mission is to produce safe & affordable housing and support economic independence by creating business and employment opportunities providing training and technical assistance developing neighborhood leadership and working with public and private resources, in addition credit counseling assists individuals and families in establishing credit, rectifying prior poor credit histories and moving towards the goal of home ownership.


Community Health Training Center

The Community Health Training Center provides maternal/child health and nutrition related programmatic and computer-based instruction.  These services are provided to all local and state human service employees.  This is part of an effort to help their clients achieve maximum self-sufficiency through integrated family-oriented services. Community Technology & Training Center (CTTC)

June 28th 2004 Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (IDCEO) SPRINGFIELD – During an appearance at the Boys & Girls Club of Springfield, Illinois First Lady Patti Blagojevich announced that three Springfield community organizations are receiving technology grants totaling nearly $136,000 as part of Governor Rod Blagojevich's Opportunity Returns plan for spurring the economy and creating jobs throughout the Central region. These Eliminate the Digital Divide grants, administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), fund technology centers in low-income communities in order to provide technology skills training and access to computers and the Internet. This program provides the critical skills that people of all ages need to succeed in today's high-tech world.

Education Initiatives 

The Education Initiatives program is designed to provide supplementary academic assistance and enrichment programs for "at-risk" students and parents while eliminating barriers and minimizing disadvantages for youth and adults in pursuit of better education.  Services include the Pre-College Math & English Tutorial Program, ACT Preparation Program, Choices/Challenges School for 7th & 8th grade girls, and the Science, Research, and Technology Science Club.
 

Employment Training & Career  Development

Those seeking employment will be coached, instructed, and counseled in their quest to achieve their goal of self-sufficiency. Summer youth employment involves work readiness training in self-esteem, career choices, and success in life. In addition, budgeting and money management provide an outstanding start to a profitable and efficient summer.

Head Start Program
 

Head Start is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary national child development program designed to meet the nutritional, educational, health, social service, and mental-health needs of low-income preschool children and their families, free of charge.  Center-based and home-based programs provide opportunities to strengthen the abilities of pre-school children and start them on the right path to a successful future. For more information: Head Start
