Springfield Urban League

 Established - 1926

The Springfield Urban League was founded over 79 years ago to help African-Americans, migrating from rural communities to industrial cities, transition into the economic and social mainstream.

In July 1925, the Springfield Council of Social Agencies set aside fifty-five hundred dollars earmarked to survey and research the needs of the community. Dr. Charles S. Johnson, Research Director of the National Urban League and President of Fisk University was responsible for this task.

The interracial committee formed to interpret Dr. Jones’s research, reported that the primary finding was the fact that there was a lack of a central coordinating agency through which the social and economic life of Blacks in Springfield could find expression. The committee transformed themselves into a Board of Directors, and on September 9, 1926, the Springfield Urban League assumed residence.

The Springfield Urban League continues to assist in employment, housing, education, and social welfare to encourage economic self-sufficiency and racial inclusion.
